Finding The Next Big Thing

21 October 2001

Are you a blackjack player who is sick of the slow deterioration of games in Vegas? Or a poker player who has wisely decided that the competition is too tough at the level of play your bankroll would justify? Or maybe you are a sports bettor on a negative streak?

Where do you go from here? Where is the next opportunity? How do you cash in on your gambling knowledge in some related field?

Great innovations are not developed in laboratories at Exxon or Microsoft. To find the next big thing in gambling you need to read broadly, researching publications other gamblers shun, publications often connected with subjects like physics, statistics or game theory. You need to use the full info-gathering powers of the web, churning through thousands of discussions and web pages of little or no value. You need to consistently update your interdisciplinary knowledge of advantage play because if you don't, you will miss the importance of that formula published in the Journal of the American Statistical Association.

And you must be prepared for whole venture to be a complete waste of time. In short, you must be completely obsessive and irrational.

You could wait for one of the established gambling authors to come out with a book on how to exploit the next big thing, but the publication of such a book tends to eliminate or reduce the value of such an opportunity. You can still make money but you won't get rich. That is the corrective behaviour of the market in operation.

You might decide at the end of the day that it's just not worth it and go and get a proper job, along with the pension and health insurance.

But then, you will never experience the sheer delight and the huge financial reward of the Big Score, the angle that no one played before you.
